“I don’t have a message. My message is my life.” – Mahatma Gandhi

October 2nd is a very prominent day for all Indians. It is a day to remember Father of our Nation, M.K. Gandhi and is observed as a national holiday. Now-a-days only few people think about Gandhi. The present youth emphasize on their regular studies, spend time with friends and other activities and pay least attention and importance for principles or moral values. Here are the insights and ideas and principles and philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi on the eve of his birth anniversary to awaken and inspire Indian youth.

It is well known that Gandhi was born on October 2nd, 1869 in his ancestral home at Porbandar. He played a very prominent role in our freedom struggle. He led several movements such as Salt Satyagraha and Quit India movement. During his freedom struggle he was imprisoned number of times. In Salt Satyagraha he walked around 400 kilometers from Ahmadabad to Dandi. Gandhi made campaigns to erase poverty and social evil such as untouchability and caste discrimination. He also fought for equality of Harijans on par with higher castes.

Gandhi led an austerely life. He was honest from childhood. Once his master asked him to copy from other person in an examination but he did not copy and eventually got lesser marks than his classmates. But, he never felt bad about it. In his childhood, Gandhi was addicted to smoking and once he stole gold from his house. He rectified his mistake by giving a letter to his father which contained all his mischief. Tears rolled on out of his father’s eyes but his father did not say anything to Gandhi. This incident made a great impact in Gandhi’s life.

The sutras of Gandhi are Satyagraha, simplicity, ahimsa (non-violence) and belief in God. Gandhi always stressed on Satyagraha, he was able to conquer mighty British rule with these sutras. The application of this to our lives is that we should be honest with others and also in all aspects of our lives. The second sutra is simplicity. He always wore khadi dress. He didn’t concern what others would think of it. He was a strict vegetarian and maintained until his death. Even though he spent nearly half of his life in foreign countries he never ate meat. The next sutra is ahimsa. Unlike Subash Chandra Bose, Gandhi adopted a nonviolent path for the freedom struggle. Gandhi quoted, “There are many causes that I am prepared to die for but no causes that I am prepared to kill for.” The principle signifies that we should try to avoid violent path and anger. Finally, we should have faith as without faith we can’t achieve anything.

Gandhi has many followers throughout the world such Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King Jr, Dalai Lama, Aung San Suu Kyi and Barack Obama to name a few. Congressman John Lewis quoted, “I surely believe without (Mahatma) Gandhi – without Gandhi in India – there would be no Barack Obama as president’ of the United States.” Gandhi is an international leader and United Nations declared Gandhi’s birthday i.e. 02 October as “International Day of Non-Violence.” It indicates the international presence and acceptance of Gandhi as a global leader.

On 30 January 1948, Gandhi was assassinated by Nathuram Godse. Gandhi led a simple life and sacrificed his life for India’s independence. He is mortal but his principles are immortal. Youth should take inspiration from Gandhi’s ideas and ideals and apply the same for making a peaceful and prosperous India.

“The thing I really care about is the mission; making the world open.” – Mark Zuckerberg

Facebook is like a person’s identity. It connects people across the world. We are able to chat with our friends and know their status. We can update our status, share our thoughts, opinions, experience and knowledge with our friends. We meet new people and we can upload our photos and videos, create groups, ask questions to friends, play games and many more fun things. This was possible due to innovative thinking of Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of the Facebook.

The merit of Facebook is that it is free for users. Now it has more than 800 million users. It is like a media for communication. However, the demerit is that people spend too much time on it and forget the world. Hence, people should spend limited time on it so that they can concentrate on their goals and objectives. Facebook has become a threat to Orkut, Twitter and other messengers such as yahoo messengers.

Facebook has bright future as it is constantly innovating and including several new features. It is trying to change the profile pages of the users. Recently Facebook made a tie up with music and movie companies such as Spotify and Netflix. The strategy is to include music to social networking site. By tying up with Facebook Spotify gained 1 million new users. It has become advantage for both Facebook and Spotify and it is win-win for both companies. People have fallen in love with Facebook because of all these features.

Once there were three friends Ken, Ben and Ron who were classmates. They all were studying in high school. One day their entire class was taken to a jungle on tour for five days. They spent their time by trekking, studying about plants and flowers and played in river. They went deep inside the thick forest searching for specific herbs which were available only in that jungle.

They walked a long distance and lost their way. They didn’t know how to get back to their camp site. In the meanwhile, the camp returned. Ken, Ben and Ron were left alone. They spent the night under a tree. In the jungle they didn’t know how to search for food and how to live. But they all enjoyed living in jungle with a fresh air. First they wanted to prepare a home to live. So, they constructed make shift house. Then they started searching for food. Since it was a jungle they had fruits and sometimes they stole eggs of some birds and ate. They spent their time by swimming and studying about plants and animals.

In the mean while, teachers realized Ken, Ben and Ron were not present. They came back and started their search for three and got them after ten days of heavy search.

When these three returned to their normal life they thought that something was missing in their life. They thought that they didn’t have trees, fresh air and some fantastic scenery in city. Hence, they started planting some trees.

The moral of the story is that we enjoy many things but we should also start enjoying the beauty of nature. Hence, protect environment.

There are few people in this world who strive for wealth ignoring precious things in their lives. In fact, wealth is the root of many problems in this world. People neglect their family, happiness and pleasure during the course of their journey towards success. Here goes the story of James who strived for so much for so little.

James hailed from middle class family. He faced several failures in his life. He had a loving wife and affectionate children. He thought of becoming a wealthy person to earn respect in the society. He started doing business and avoided spending money for basic things like food, cloth and shelter. He put his wife and children under tight financial controls and spent most of his time working hard.

After few years he became very rich. He developed several health problems in his life and had no happiness. As a result, his children got separated from him. However, James’ wife remained with him until her last breath. Later he began realizing the value of life and importance of wife and children. Although he had wealth he lost his happiness, health and peace in his quest for wealth.

Therefore, don’t search for stones by leaving gems at home. Don’t bother for wealth ignoring health, happiness and family. It is always the journey that counts, not the destination in life.

Mark was a ten years old boy who lived near seashore. He always felt very lonely. He didn’t have friends because of his unusual behavior such as sitting often near the window, immersing with his dreams and spending most of his time sleeping on his desk in school. His classmates bullied him because of his unusual behavior.

Mark prayed to God regularly for good friends before going to sleep. One day God responded him in dreams that he would find a stone on the seashore. The stone would have all colors of rainbow. With the help of that stone he could call God three times and get three wishes. Upon reaching the seashore Mark found the stone as per the descriptions of God.

He called God for fulfilling his first wish of having a friend who will always respond him, won’t bully him and adjust with his behavior. God thought for a moment and gave him a parrot that satisfied his conditions. Mark was happy initially but gradually felt bored.

Mark requested for accomplishing his second wish of giving better friend than parrot who could play with him. God thought for a moment and gave life to the toys he had so that he could play with them. However, Mark felt that he was missing something in his new toy friends.

Finally, Mark requested God for fulfilling his third wish of having a friend like God so that he would not get bored. God cautioned Mark that it was his third wish and granted his final wish. However, Mark still did not feel happy with his third wish.

Again Mark called God but God did not arrive to grant him a wish as he had run out his three wishes. Finally, God appeared and advised Mark that friend is not meant for chitchatting and playing but for sharing thoughts, sorrows and happiness. And also added that you cannot have friends exactly the way you want. It is better to look at similarities rather than differences for ensuring everlasting friendship.

Once in a forest there was flock of birds living in trees. One bird among them sang exceptionally well. Rest of the birds enjoyed her singing. The animals in the forest also enjoyed her singing. However, her singing led to troubles for other birds and animals as several hunters came to the forest to hunt the birds and animals. Some died and some were captured while escaping from the hunters. Hence, the animals asked birds to relocate to avoid getting killed by hunters. Rest of the birds advised the singing bird not to sing all the time as it cost their lives. The singing bird did not pay heed to the advice of other birds and kept singing.

The flock relocated to other forests. The singing bird started singing in the new forest. The animals in the new forest enjoyed the singing. However, few birds did not appreciate and hatched a conspiracy to ruin the voice of the singing bird.

Everyday five to six male birds would meet singing bird and offer heavy food to eat. Gradually the singing bird became hefty and her voice became husky. As a result, the singing bird could not sing melodiously. Rest of the birds lived happily in the forest. But the singing bird remained unhappy forever. The moral of the story is that we should not be spoilsport.

Once upon a time there was an old bungalow in a town. There were rumors that the bungalow was surrounded by evils spirits. Nobody dared to go near the bungalow. An old man lived in it and nobody talked with him.

One day a stranger – Max visited the town. He decided to stay in the bungalow as he was not aware about the rumors. He was happy to meet the old man who was warm and cordial. Gradually he became closer to him. When Max visited the town for shopping everybody avoided talking to him. After returning to the bungalow he enquired from old man why everybody was averse to talk to him. The old man replied that everyone in the town believed that he had evil powers and spirits. As a result, they avoided talking to him. The old man also added that a friend spread rumors in the town when they had altercation on property issues. And the town people began believing in rumors.

Max listened and understood the real motive behind spreading rumors and he decided to clear the cloud. He began spreading the truth to town people and gradually there was change in the attitude of the people and finally, they started visiting the old bungalow and talking to the old man.

The moral from this story is not to believe in rumors. Always check the real reasons and motives behind rumors.

Once there was an unlucky village. The village reeled under drought for several years due to lack of rain. . Many evacuated the place as there was no hope for survival while some stayed with hope. There was no harvest due to dearth of water.

One day a great sage came to the village and things changed for better suddenly. It rained well and every one was getting water to drink. Everybody praised the sage. The sage said that everything would happen when the time comes. He also added that God gives opportunity only once and one has to avail it. The sage stayed in the village for a fortnight and left. The villagers were happy as they had everything.

Subsequently villagers stopped working hard. They didn’t construct reservoirs to conserve water. They thought that it was adequate for ten years. They didn’t put their efforts on cultivation. Like this few months passed. Finally, they were in the same disaster again. But this time the village was not spared from extinction.

Hence, remember that God gives opportunity only once.
